When Rafael Margolin was born on December 15, 1873, in Russia, his father, Eliyahu, was 40 and his mother, Basha, was 34. He married Goldie Kivelevitz on March 26, 1895, in his hometown. They had six children in 13 years. He died on April 21, 1921, in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 47, and was buried there.

Immigrant parents who had been part of the great wave of migration from Russia in 1905. Raphael came first, sending for the rest of the family when he could afford their transportation. Like many others, Raphael Margolin peddled with a horse and wagon. Never in good health, he died at an early age, leaving his wife with five children whom she supported by taking in roomers at their home on Adams Street.
